The Pascua Yaqui Tribe breaks ground on Tucson’s newest golf course

Desert oasis-style course to feature Notah Begay III design and Jack Nicklaus Academy of Golf

Tucson’s Pascua Yaqui Tribe held a ground breaking ceremony today on its newest amenity, an 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course, situated directly south of Casino Del Sol Resort’s AVA Amphitheater. The golf course, named “Sewailo,” meaning “flower world” in the Yaqui language.

“This groundbreaking is one of of many exciting milestones we plan to recognize as we continue to offer the highest quality amenities to the guests of Casino Del Sol Resort,” said Wendell Long, CEO of Casino Del Sol Resort.

Large lakes, flowing streams, waterfalls and plush landscaping blend with the desert environment to create a wonderful “oasis” effect. The course transitions through both desert terrain and the oasis environment, while taking full advantage of the surrounding mountain views to create an exciting and unique golfing experience. The course winds seamlessly through gently rolling terrain, with a mix of wonderfully strategic holes that combines a full range of shot values and aesthetics. The course is designed to be challenging, memorable and enjoyable for players of all levels.

“Sewailo, in conjunction with the recently opened Casino Del Sol Resort, is a unique opportunity to showcase the beauty and tradition of the Pascua Yaqui community,” said golf course designer Notah Begay III. “I’m delighted to see this project come to fruition and confident that the golf course will serve the Pascua Yaqui community for generations to come.”

In addition to the breathtaking grounds, Sewailo will also offer the first Jack Nicklaus Academy of Golf in Arizona. The Nicklaus Academy will provide instructional programs designed for all ages and ability levels, and will be open to the public. Featuring an expansive dual-ended driving range more than 375-yards long, a 2,000 square-foot climate controlled teaching facility and multiple practice bunkers, the Nicklaus Academy will offer a full complement of instruction programs designed for everything from individual lessons to group instruction, golf schools, corporate programming and community programs.

  1. We’re already getting calls for your golf course! I played golf for U of A from ’96-’00 and we specialize in Phoenix/Tucson golf tee times. Please let me know if we can work together when the golf course opens. All the best!
